About

As part of Black History Month, I produced a short documentary exploring the history and legacy of Highfield Rangers, one of Leicester’s most historic grassroots football clubs. Founded in 1970 by Caribbean migrants from the Windrush generation seeking opportunities to play and belong in football, the film celebrates the club’s impact on the local community and shares its story in the hope of inspiring others through the power of the game.

Production Approach

The aim of the film was to tell an authentic community story through the voices of the people who shaped the club. Filming took place across two separate days using a Sony ZV-E10 camera and Rode microphones to ensure clear, high quality visuals and audio throughout the interviews.

Interviews formed the centre of the documentary, allowing key club members and stakeholders to reflect on the history of Highfield Rangers and the challenges that led to its creation. These conversations were supported by visual footage captured during training sessions and around the club to provide context, atmosphere and a sense of the club’s environment.

The storytelling approach focused on balancing the club’s historical roots with its present day impact, showing how the founding values of inclusion and opportunity continue to shape the club today.

The film was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro, with the narrative shaped through direct conversations with stakeholders involved in the project to ensure the story was authentic and representative of the club’s history.

Accessibility was also an important part of the production process. Subtitles were added so the documentary could be understood without sound and reach wider audiences across social media. A repurposed short form version was also created for Instagram, with the edit adapted to the 9:16 vertical format used for Instagram Reels to maximise engagement on mobile devices.

Ingemar
impact

The film reached more than 5,000 views across Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, helping bring the story of Highfield Rangers to a wider audience across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

By sharing the club’s history, the project helped educate audiences about the contribution of Black communities to football across the county, while highlighting an important chapter of local grassroots history. The documentary also celebrated the role community clubs play in creating opportunities, building confidence and bringing people together through the game.
